4 Tips To Soothe Your Pet's Fears Of The Veterinarian's Office

Posted on

Regular veterinary care is important for all pets. Your pet's vet can provide preventative care, diagnoses, vaccinations, and medication as needed. Unfortunately, some pets find the vet's office alarming. You can't explain to them the importance of medical care, but there are steps you can take to make them more comfortable. Here are four steps you can take to soothe your pet's fear of the veterinarian's office:

1. Leave your pet's carrier out at all times.

For many pets and owners, the stress begins before you even set foot in the vet's office. Trying to get your pet into their carrier for transport can be difficult, especially if your pet associates their cage with a trip to the vet's office. Break the association by leaving your pet's carrier out at all times. Leave the door open, and fill it with comfortable bedding, toys, and treats. Let your pet go in and out of the carrier at will. The purpose of this is to remove your pet's fear of the carrier, so when the time comes to use it for the trip to the vet's office, your pet will be relaxed.

2. Take your pet to the vet's office for grooming.

Some veterinarian's offices provide general pet care in addition to medical treatment. They can clean your pet's teeth, trim their nails, and ensure their coat is clean and free from bugs and parasites. Many pets enjoy being handled and groomed, so these services can make your pet feel more at ease in the vet's office.

3. Keep your pet's carrier off the ground in the vet's office.

The waiting room at most veterinarian clinics is usually very busy and filled with many different kinds of animals. This can be very stressful for your pet, especially if they don't typically get along with other animals. Setting your pet's carrier on the ground can elevate their stress levels, especially if dogs and cats come by to sniff at your pet through the bars of the cage. Help your pet feel safe and protected by putting their carrier on your lap or the seat next to you if at all possible.

4. Give your pet a special treat after their checkup.

After your pet's vet appointment, take them to a park to run around or buy them an extra special treat. You want them to associate trips to the vet with positive, fun things. Over time, this will make vet appointments easier and less stressful for both of you.
